Kirilivske Lake

In Kyiv, work continues to address the pollution of Kirilivske Lake, caused by a Russian shelling on July 2nd. Over three weeks of comprehensive measures, the volume of oil products in the water body has been reduced from an estimated 350 cubic meters to about 30 cubic meters – a decrease of more than 12 times. This was reported by the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Valentyn Mondriivskyi.

“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of city services and rescuers, a significant result has been achieved – the extent of the lake’s pollution has decreased by over 12 times. This was made possible by the prompt actions of all services that worked on-site from the very first days. However, the work is not yet finished. Our objective is to completely eliminate the consequences of the pollution, continuously monitor the condition of the water body, and do everything necessary for its restoration,” stated Valentyn Mondriivskyi.

The units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the city of Kyiv have completed their stage of emergency rescue operations on the water body. Rescuers worked around the clock to contain the pollution and pump out the main mass of the oil-water emulsion. The Department for Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation, as well as the Municipal Enterprise “Pleso,” express gratitude to the rescuers for their prompt and professional work, which significantly reduced the volume of pollution and prevented its further spread.

Following the completion of the emergency rescue phase, the Municipal Enterprise “Pleso” is continuing its work to clean the water body, monitor its ecological condition, and remove residual contamination.

This week, specialists from “Pleso,” in conjunction with representatives from the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Capital District, conducted a comprehensive survey of the lake and its shoreline. Samples of water and soil were collected for further laboratory analysis.

The documentation of the facts and circumstances of the oil products entering the water body is ongoing. This data is essential for accurately determining the scale of damage inflicted upon the ecosystem and calculating the losses.

“We are currently paying special attention to the area of Syretsky stream. Contaminated vegetation is being mowed along its shoreline. Subsequently, sorbent will be reapplied to the cleared sections to bind residual oil products in the soil. The contaminated reeds, cut by a specialized amphibious machine, Mobitrac, are being collected into special big bags for subsequent disposal. Currently, 45 cubic meters of contaminated organic waste have been collected and prepared for disposal,” added the Head of the Municipal Enterprise “Pleso,” Andriy Vagin.

The enterprise also continues its weekly measurements of the oil product film thickness on the lake’s surface. This allows for tracking the dynamics of pollution reduction and evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented measures.

The comprehensive cleanup operations to address the pollution of Kirilivske Lake are continuing. The Municipal Enterprise “Pleso” continues its weekly monitoring of the water body’s condition and adjacent areas, and the results of the measures taken and further steps will be communicated additionally.

It was previously reported that over 2400 apartment buildings have enhanced their energy independence.
